Essential nickel powder metallurgy information

Hart Materials is pleased to announce that – with the permission of the publishers ASM International – a copy of a new definitive paper on the properties and applications of nickel powders, published as part of the ASM Handbook, Volume 7: Powder Metallurgy, is now available in the Library Section of our website. The uses of nickel powders have been expanding and changing during the past few years so this detailed compilation is a valuable up-to-the-minute summary for anyone involved in their use, particularly in research and development.

A former serving officer in the U.S. Navy, the author of the paper, Lou Koehler MBA, is an internationally-acknowledged expert on these materials who has been closely involved with nickel powders and other nickel-based particulate materials since 1977.

For many years he worked for, what was then the International Nickel Company (INCO), and during this time, as well as managing nickel powder sales for the parent company, he was also President of Novamet Specialty Products Corporation – a wholly owned subsidiary of INCO.

Since his retirement in 2009 he had been President of his own consultancy, Koehler Associates, providing in management, marketing and technical services to the powder metals industry.

Lou has had a very close association with the Metal Powder Industries Federation (MPIF) serving as Director of the organisation from 2004 to 2009. In 2009 he was recipient of the Distinguished Service to Powder Metallurgy award. He remains affiliated with the MPIF writing a monthly column for the organization's newsletter.

The updated and revised 2015 edition of ASM Handbook, Volume 7: Powder Metallurgy covers all aspects of powder metallurgy—including powder production and characterisation, powder compaction, sintering, and compaction methods—and features new coverage of metal injection molding.

The new handbook format simplifies understanding of process and property relationships by treating each metal/alloy family in individual divisions.
