NOVAMET Green Nickel Oxide for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells (SOFC)

The development of new and alternative sources for generating and converting energy has become a matter of vital importance as the world's energy comsumption continues to rise.  Fuel cells provide by far the most efficient method currently available for converting thermal energy produced by combustible materials into electrical energy.  Of the various technologies available for the manufacture of this type of device solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) constitute one of the most practical, economic and well developed alternatives, well suited for a diverse range of applications.

One of the principal advantages of the SOFC is that the essential component of the ceramic electrolyte that makes up the working anode is a readily available and relatively inexpensive material, green nickel oxide.  However, both the chemical and physical properties of the nickel oxide employed in the production of anodes for SOFC are critical in maximising both the electrical and mechanical properties of the working cell and therefore its conversion efficiency and durability.

A novel ultra fine grade of green nickel oxide (NOVAMET GNO Type 'F'), recently developed in the USA by NOVAMET Specialty Products Corporation, is ideal for the new and specialised technology of SOFC manufacture.  The material consists of discrete particles of oxide and has a very tightly controlled size range with a mean value of 1-2 microns (as measured by the Microtrac method).  This, in combination with an extremely high degree of chemical purity, enables optimum anode performance to be achieved with high levels of consistency.

NOVAMET Type 'F' Green Nickel Oxide is marketed by HART MATERIALS LIMITED.
